History and Project Summary

How is Hope for Humanity meeting the need for education through Hope and Resurrection Secondary School?

Since 2002, we have provided secondary school scholarships to over 35 of the most promising southern Sudanese students living in Kenya and Uganda. They attend boarding school and upon completion return to southern Sudan to help rebuild their homeland. But, we wanted to do something which would make a greater impact by educating more young men and women. In 2004, we identified the incredible need for secondary education among the youth living in Southern Sudan and we began raising funds to build a secondary school. We made our first trip to Sudan in 2005 to work with the church and community leaders to learn where they wanted the school to be built. One of the larger states in great need of schools, Lakes State, was chosen for the school’s location.

In July, 2007, coming in under schedule and under budget, Hope and Resurrection Secondary School’s ten classroom, two building structure was completed in the village of Atiaba. This is only the second secondary school in the region!

A construction crew, led by an American missionary, combined 16 experienced Kenyan men with 20 local Sudanese apprentices.

The school was constructed using Hydraform bricks, which lock together like Legos, and were made locally using a Hydraform machine. They are held in place by poured concrete columns. The bricks are composed of 97% sand and soil, available locally, and 3% cement, which was imported. The roof is constructed using local mahogany timber and imported iron sheeting. The school was completed in just three months.

Having a permanent structure allows classes to be held year around, without the interruption which typically occurs during the long periods of heavy rain.

The local people recognize that their current educational state is in great need of improvement. They have asked us to be their partners in to helping to raise the educational standard in the South. This will be achieved through the training and mentoring of the teachers, limiting class size, providing textbooks and teacher’s manuals. Through an application process, we will ensure success by matching the student’s ability to the grade level.

The Vision for Hope and Resurrection Secondary School

Hope and Resurrection Secondary School will open in April, 2008.

Hope and Resurrection Secondary School’s vision is to provide a quality education for the very best students in Southern Sudan, allowing them a chance to prosper and flourish in the world, helping themselves and others in the race against poverty and oppression.

The plan is for Hope and Resurrection Secondary School to become a model school which will raise the standard of education and lay the groundwork for duplication.

Mission partners from America will serve as Headmistress and Administrator for the school initially with the goal of training the local staff to take over. From the beginning, we will employ a co-headmaster and local teachers. Teacher training and mentoring will be as much a priority as providing quality education to the students.

Class size will be limited to 25 students per class. The school will open with only ninth grade and add another level each year until the school is full at the end of four years.

Textbooks will be available for each student. The curriculum includes vocational training such as agriculture, woodworking and sewing. Such skills will benefit the students after they complete their secondary education, whether or not they go on to attend university.

Future plans include boarding facilities which will attract the best students from all over Southern Sudan.

What needs to be done?

After the initial start up costs of desks and supplies, ongoing funding will be needed to provide scholarships for qualified students who are not financially able to pay the tuition.

Future building phases include teacher’s housing, a kitchen and dining hall and boarding facilities for the students.
