Welcome to Hope for Humanity
The Rev. Paul Johnson, former rector at Christ Church, Glen Allen, Virginia,
has something to tell you about Hope and Resurrection Secondary School
in Atiaba, South Sudan.
In 2004, Richmond, VA based Hope for Humanity, Inc. was formed with the vision to provide educational opportunities to the youth of South Sudan. As a result of several civil wars in the world's newest nation, any infrastructure, including the education system, was destroyed. Now only 20%of South Sudanese can read: the second highest illiteracy rate in the world. Today, the youth are looking to education as the tool to move themselves from poverty to self sufficiency.
In 2007, Hope for Humanity completed the construction of a secondary school in the village of Atiaba, South Sudan: The rural school is one of the very few private secondary schools in the region. A mere7% of South Sudanese teachers have had any formal teacher training. In response to the request from church and community leaders, we employ trained, university educated teachers from Ugandaso our students may benefit from a quality education and be empowered for leadership roles.
