At this time there are very few schools
in southern Sudan and those that do exist do not have
adequately trained teachers, textbooks, or supplies. In
the camps, the schools are overcrowded and very few young
people have an opportunity to participate. Therefore,
many, many southern Sudanese have moved to Kenya and Uganda
in order to seek an opportunity for education. However,
all students, even citizens, must pay to attend secondary
schools in these countries. Since the Sudanese are not
allowed to work in these countries, they spend their time
searching for sponsors.
Hope for Humanityhas a program in place called East Africa
Youth Scholarships that accepts scholarship applications
from the Sudanese in Kenya and Uganda who desire to attend
secondary schools. Based on the scholarship requests,
Hope for Humanity seeks individuals in the U.S. who are
willing to provide the necessary funding for young men
and women to attend secondary schools.
Information requested from the applicant includes a copy
of any previous grade report along with a letter from
the student stating his/her history and how the student
plans to return and assist in the rebuilding of southern
Sudan. Hope for Humanity seeks strong candidates with
a good academic history and a desire to help the people
back home in southern Sudan.
Sponsors are encouraged to communicate with their
student and to build a lasting relationship. Many of our
sponsors and students have formed valuable relationships
through written communication and photographs. Its
been a blessing to both the student and the sponsor. The
cost is $1,500 per year, which covers school fees (including
supplies and personal effects); room and board; and transportation
costs. Our hope is that the sponsor will see the student
through completion of secondary school.
The difference a sponsor can make in the life of their
student is immeasurable. Knowing that someone, a stranger,
cares enough to provide a scholarship so they can achieve
their educational dream is incredibly encouraging to the
students.
Jennifer Ernst, upon her return from a 2005 trip to Kenya,
where she originally met some of the current students,
stated, I visited students who had been in our program
since 2002. I was very encouraged to see these young men
again and to witness the evident changes in their lives.
They looked healthier and happier; they were more poised
and confident. Each of them expressed their gratitude
for their sponsors commitment which has provided
a brighter future for them and their families. At that
moment, the importance of this program became even more
real to me.
One of the most important and lasting gifts you can give
is that of education, especially for an individual who
has no means to achieve this on their own. Please consider
participating in this scholarship program and join with
us in a truly life-changing process.
